Ecco il codice per farlo direttamente con JavaScript. Ma, come già detto, è molto meglio usare una libreria JavaScript. La mia preferita è jQuery.
Nel caso qui sotto, una pagina ASPX (che serve come un povero servizio REST) viene chiamata per restituire un oggetto JavaScript JSON.
