No Ubuntu 14.04 nem sudo service networking restart
nem sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
fazem mais nada. Ambos também saem com o código 1. Alguma coisa obviamente mudou (ou metade mudou) mas eu não consigo't encontrar o quê. Isto obviamente causa problemas com reconfiguração de rede remota e ferramentas como Ansible.

Qual é a maneira correta de reiniciar a rede no Ubuntu 14.04 Server remotamente?
Acontece que isto é um " característica". A forma **somente*** suportada de reiniciar uma interface no Ubuntu Server é sudo ifdown eth0 && sudo ifup eth0
.

O que's mudou é que eles não't querem você "bouncing" a rede não funciona mais. parar, e começar, ainda funciona. reiniciar não funciona mais. Eu apenas "resolvi" este "problema" ou seja, recuperei o antigo comportamento. Para reverter ao comportamento anterior: Pegue um arquivo 13.10 /etc/init/networking.conf e substitua o arquivo 14.04 por ele. (editar: esclarecido qual substitui qual)

Obviamente há'é uma razão pela qual eles colocam uma saída defensiva lá dentro, mas eles não'não se preocupam em realmente produzir o que'está acontecendo muito bem.
Uma entrada entra em /var/log/upstart/networking.log quando você tenta, que se parece:
Stopping or restarting the networking job is not supported.
Use ifdown & ifup to reconfigure desired interface.
Mas eles realmente poderiam/deveriam ter saída isso como mensagem de diálogo quando você tenta reiniciar a rede de serviços. ah bem. descobriram isso e até mesmo um trabalho antigo.
EDIT: Eu descobri que isto causa um disparo não intencional do script controlado por /etc/init/failsafe.conf, o que é indesejável pois causa um atraso de 120 segundos em cada inicialização... bem como talvez mascarando problemas reais de má configuração/rede que este atraso's aparição indicaria, mas ele's já mostra o tempo todo. (por exemplo, um cabo desconectado, que estava permitindo acesso a um compartilhamento de arquivo de rede mapeado em /etc/fstab, por exemplo)
Em qualquer caso, eu vou descobrir o que está causando isso sempre acertando o timeout, e postar uma correção quando eu encontrar.
